Color is really just something interesting our brains do with light. Our perception of it exists in the eye as much as in the external world, and could vary more from person to person than we'll ever know. The art and science of photography is based on ways to record the actions of light: the word "photograph" is based on the Greek words for "light" and "writing." Until the digital age, photographic prints traditionally started with a negative image, with light, dark, and colors reversed in a darkroom. The Light series explores what happens to an image when colors are inverted and shifted into something different, beautiful, light and strange. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display

About the Art

Critics have described Doris Mitsch's photography as “voluptuous, highly tactile,” “fleshy and tender,” and “a meditative revelation.” Her work has been published and exhibited internationally, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Mitsch is interested in what happens when familiar things are made unfamiliar under different light or from new perspectives. “There’s so much about the natural world that we don’t understand or even see. Most often we experience it at some remove: a vista point, a trail, an arrangement… Even nature photography has conventions that hold us at a distance. It’s an interesting challenge to find a new way to look at something like a flower, which has already been photographed so many times, and find qualities that might not have been apparent before.” Mitsch lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a graduate of Stanford University.
