Lightning arrester test, 1940s artwork. This piece of equipment is used to protect the insulation on electrical power systems from lightning strikes. The lightning, seen here as a blue flash, is diverted to travel through the arrestor instead of through the insulation (seen in background and at right). The arrestor typically consists of a material that only conducts at high voltages. This artwork is by the French artist Roger Soutric and was published in November 1944 in 'Science et Vie' (Science and Life), a monthly science magazine published in France since 1913. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display
