Giant clam (Tridacna crocea). This is a bivalve mollusc that feeds by filtering food particles from the water. The soft lining of the clam's shell contains symbiotic zooxanthellae. These are photosynthetic algae that produce oxygen for the clam, and feed on food scraps and the clam's waste. It is the zooxanthellae that are responsible for the bright colour of the mantle. Some species of giant clam may reach over a metre in width and weigh over 200 kilograms. They live in shallow tropical waters, usually on coral reefs. Photographed off Sangalaki, Indonesia. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display
