Published November 1, 2010LifeInmate, under lamp, threading a string of macaroni. "In the pen they had me on the macaroni necklace work detail six days a week. It was easier than turning out license plates of busting up rocks, but rough on the back and the eyes. Sometimes I'd forget to properly store my output after work, and at night the rats would gobble up an entire day's product. Other times I'd sneak some dry macaroni back to my cell for a late- night treat. Holding a piece in my mouth for a while would eventually soften it up enough to get down. One time I got greedy and popped in more than a few at once. They congealed and I had to be emergency-heimliched by a beefy squad of guards. For original art inquiries, please call 212-286-7133 or email originalart@newyorkerstore.com.Photo licensed from the Condé Nast Collection, home of The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair and other popular brands.
