About the Art

Paul Chabas (1869 – 1937) was a French painter who achieved success through notoriety. Originally from Nantes, Chabas studied at the Académie des Beaux Arts under the renowned William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Chabas specialized in painting charming, youthful female nudes in natural settings. His most famous work, “September Morn,” was a painting of a young nude girl coyly standing in a lake. It enraged the Society for the Suppression of Vice, making the piece an instant sensation. Chabas went on to win many awards in France and London, and was a member of the Committee of French Artists and L’Institut of Paris.
