About the Art

Though limited in their palette, Franz Kline’s black and white paintings pack the potency and drama of an entire spectrum of color. A leading Abstract Expressionist, Kline (1910 – 1962) initially painted cityscapes and landscapes of the coal-mining region in Pennsylvania where he was born. Inspired by urban and rural landscapes, he later used housepainters' brushes to produce explosive black slashes on stark white backgrounds. Kline abandoned figurative works in favor of abstraction when fellow artist Willem de Kooning projected one of Kline’s sketches to enormous proportions, revealing only the powerful lines of the composition. Kline’s art profoundly influenced the next generation of gestural painters, and his works are among the most monumental achievements of Abstract Expressionism.

Franz Kline's "Untitled 1950"

Pros

  • Great Quality Paper
  • Perfect Size
  • Visually Appealing

Cons

    Purchase Reason

    • Accent Piece
    • Decoration
    • Fill Wall Space
    • Inspiration
    • Perfect For Design Period

    Comments:

I'm framing it with an ornate thick gold frame, which will be very expensive (waiting for high percentage off deal). It will grace my totally redesigned front room & adjacent home office. It's going to "make" the room. It's really eye catching to take an art work from one period and frame it with a design that is appropriately UNlike it, i.e. abstract expressionism artwork with baroque frame.

There is nothing that is not great about this piece. For many years I was envisioning an artwork by Franz Kline and THIS was it. When I saw it, I knew it would be perfect!

    Comments:

I've purchased many framed prints from Art.com and been very satisfied with the quality. The only negative was one print with a minor mat shadow near the frame on the mat. Aside from me, I don't think anyone would notice this flaw.

This print has the metal hanger fixtures installed so close to the outer edge of the frame, that you can see them and the frame hangs slightly out from the wall at the bottom. The other similar print does not have this defect. I solved the problem of the frame protruding from the wall by installing a folded paper towel behind the print near the bottom frame. You can still see the metal attachment from the side.

    I would still recommend Art.com.
