Champion of the working class, legendary artist and political activist Diego Rivera celebrated a tradition of his loyal supporters with the fiery and festive “Baile en Tehauntepec.” Passionately advocating the civil rights of his fellow citizens, Mexican-born Rivera (1886 – 1957) was known for immense outdoor murals which condensed complex historical subjects in to their most essential elements. Rivera is credited for reintroducing the fresco, a mural painted on fresh plaster, into modern art and architecture and, through his work, provided an alternative to elite galleries and museums, making his artwork and political messages accessible to anyone.
